| Science and Technology Education in India
India is fast emerging as a Knowledge Economy. Its spectacular performance in the IT sector has helped the country's offshoring sector emerge as the world's largest and fastest growing. McKinsey Quarterly predicts that by 2007-08 the BPO industry workforce will consist of 1.45 million to 1.55 million people and the industry will account for 7 per cent of India's GDP. But there is cause for concern as well. According to research by the McKinsey Global Institute, 'India's vast supply of graduates is smaller than it seems once their suitability for employment by multinational companies is considered.'[15 December 2005] [Read Factsheet] |

| Civil Aviation - Fact Sheet
India has a civil aviation network comprising 449 airports/airstrips. There has been a dramatic rise in the levels of passenger and cargo traffic. From just 5.1 million passengers in 1970, domestic and international passenger traffic has grown to nearly 44 million passengers in 2003-04. During the last ten years the growth in passenger traffic has been a spectacular 125 per cent. By 2010, the forecast is that air traffic will increase to around 90 million. Domestic and international passenger traffic in India is projected to grow annually at 12.5 per cent and 7 per cent over the next decade. Similarly, air cargo exports from India are expected to rise from the present 0.8 million tonnes to 2.4 million tonnes while domestic cargo will rise from 300,000 tonnes to over 1 million tonnes by 2010. This growth potential, coupled with the government's decision to allow private sector participation in the running of five key airports as also in airport modernisation, ground services, aircraft manufacture, makes India a very attractive market for airport and avionics equipment manufacturers and service providers. The Government of India policy to liberalise the civil aviation market also presents foreign firms with significant export and investment opportunities. [5 March 2005] [Read the factsheet] |

| | | Clinical Development and Trials in India New drug research and development hinges on successful, cost-effective and competent clinical development. It is estimated that clinical trials for a drug can cost up to US $350 million. The dual challenge of accelerating clinical development and reducing costs is driving global pharmaceutical companies to outsource clinical trials. India is emerging as a key country in this respect because of the presence of a large patient population, English-speaking medical practitioners, many of whom have been trained in the West, a significant pharmaceutical industry which has dominated world markets with its cheap generics and lower cost of clinical development. ICFDC presents an analysis of this emerging new sector. [22 October 2004] (Read the Factsheet)
